The Velvelettes

The Velvelettes are best known for their mid '60s Motown hit "He Was Really Sayin' Somethin'," later covered with great success in Bananarama in the early '80s, and "Needle in a Haystack," which almost charted in the pop Top 40. Formed by Bertha Barbee at Western Michigan University in the early '60s, Cal Gill was only 14 years old when she joined as the lead singer. After some encouragement from one of Berry Gordy's nephews, they auditioned for Motown and released their first single on the label in 1963. They continue to tour the globe and have quite a following in the UK and elsewhere.
